Aeropsia - from the Greek aëros (air) and opsis (seeing/sight/appearance), ‘seeing air’

Aeropsia is a low-resolution custom-made screen displaying a procedural generated animation based on the Perlin noise algorithm. Originally conceived to develop efficient naturalistic looking textures, Perlin noise has been widely used in Hollywood, the video game industry and virtual simulations since the early 90s. From Star Wars to Titanic, the algorithm has embedded organic patterns to CGI’s fabricated reality simulating clouds, oceans and other features of the landscape and “natural” environment. Aeropsia implements the algorithm and filters out its details through the low-resolution output. This loss of visual information reveals a slow, complex, and ever-changing stream of evolving patterns, the noise without realistic goals.

Aeropsia was commissioned by the University of Massachusetts at Lowell (Art and Design Department) as a multiyear semi-permanent installation located in the University Crossing Building.
